Chapter 1: The Lady and I

One day, I was relaxing by Taverly Lake with my friend Kellen. "This is a change from working,” he said.

"It's nice to relax once in a while," I replied.

Kellen sat upright. "You know, I spoke to the gypsy in Varrock. She told me that one of my best friends would have a day filled with horrendous luck, and unless he found Lady Luck, who has the ability to change his course, he would die by the time the sun set tomorrow. I think you had better watch out..." and then he fell back down.

"I'm sure it's nothing. Look at the time; we had better get to an inn!” As I made my way over the broken wall near Falador, I noticed it was already dark. We went into the tavern and had a good night.

When I woke up, I was in a different place and couldn't see Kellen anywhere. "Kellen? Where are you?!" I shouted. Only a cold wind greeted me. I noticed the house I had been sleeping in was derelict and falling down. As I stood up I noticed the area outside was all muddy, and I then shook in horror. The Wilderness! How could I have come here? And then it dawned on me that this was my day of bad luck. I didn't know which way was south, but I was glad that I still had a sword with me.

So I journeyed for a while, until I saw some skeletons. As soon as they saw me they rattled and hobbled! A few swift strokes of the sword destroyed them. However, I was getting a little tired. I went along a bit, and then I saw a young woman being attacked by a greater demon!

I rushed to her rescue, diverting the demon's attack, but it sent me sprawling. I was relieved to notice that the woman had run away, so I decided to do the same. But the demon would not let his second prey escape! He chased with such speed that I knew my time would be up if I didn't think of something. Then I saw an uncut sapphire in a half-destroyed house. I picked it up and chucked it in the demon's eye. When it tried to get the gem out, it gave me an opportunity to run. Then, when I thought I was safely on my way, I saw the demon come after me again!

I decided that this time I would vanquish it for good. However, it did not attack me. It groaned and then vanished in a plume of fire.

How could this miracle have happened?

Chapter 2: A Near Miss

I looked at the black mark on the ground where the demon had been burned. I was reminded how dangerous it was here in the Wilderness. I wanted to return home as soon as possible, if it even was possible. So I wandered some more, thinking about the woman I had saved, and the strange occurrence of the demon.

I finally saw something different from old houses and rubble! I saw what looked like a crumbling castle. The moat was in an appalling condition, and chunks of the castle had broken off and were submerged in it. There was always the chance that unfriendly forces lurked there. As I made my way to the bridge, I heard some people behind me.

Pk'ers! How unlucky of me to run into these pk'ers! They hadn't noticed me yet, so I ran into the castle. When I got inside I saw evidence that people had been there. I saw a ranger's bow and arrows, and although I was unskilled in the use of them I decided to wield them. I only had a rune dagger to protect myself with because I had lost my sword in the struggle with the demon. I also put on some steel armour left on the floor and picked up a few lobsters. I could hear the pk'ers coming and knew it would be mere moments until they found me inside the castle's keep.

Through the slits in the castle wall I shot at them. The first shot missed entirely, and the second shot glanced off someone's armour. I would need to hit a weak point! There was a ranger wearing black dragonhide armour and a pure wearing full rune. I carefully aimed for the ranger's head and hit his coif. By now, the pk'ers were rapidly approaching the bridge. That was when I noticed that it was a drawbridge... If only I could find a way to lift it up to prevent them from crossing. Funny how I didn't notice the drawbridge when I first entered the castle. Oh well. I considered it another odd omen.

Ack! The pk'ers were now within killing distance of me; I had to react fast! A few shots from their ranger missed, and I tried to shoot back clumsily. Then I saw a winder; it must be the device to put up the drawbridge! I began to wind which made the bridge begin to rise! The warrior, who had made it across the bridge before it rose, was on a steep slope. I deliberately moved out of the way and let his forward impetus smash him right into the wall. I then shot an arrow into him to ensure he was dead.

As I turned my back, he arose and charged for me! I retreated further into the castle closing doors behind me. He thrust them open and continued the pursuit until I ran into a dead end. "Finally... I've got you now!" he shouted triumphantly. I, however, knew that I was testing my bad luck. I tried to cut through his armour with my rune dagger. It didn't have much of an effect and maddeningly, he just laughed. He then smashed me with his dragon axe into the wall! I could feel his overwhelming energy pass through me.

"What's your name, pk'er?" I cried out.

"Karos. These are your last minutes, noob!" He began to focus his power and flaunted a special movement. He then glowed a strange color and lunged for me!

I would have died if I had not been alert. I dodged his blow and ran past him while he tried to wrench his axe from the wall. I cut the rope to let the drawbridge down, and then I saw the ranger! He shot many times, but I used a bit of old wood as a shield as I ran toward him. I sliced his bow in half with my rune dagger. He tried slapping and punching me, but I overpowered him and brought him to the ground. I cut his throat then ran as fast as I could!

I turned back one last time; Karos watched his ranger disappear in a glory of light...

Chapter 3: Carius

I ran for at least ten minutes. I was deathly afraid of Karos; pk'ers are never pleased when their partners get killed. I knew he would remember me; and if I ever ventured in the wilderness, I would run the risk of meeting him again.

I finally stopped for a rest. I sat down and ate a few lobsters. Yum… I never knew ocean creatures could taste this good! There were only fifteen lobsters, so I decided to eat only four of them and save the rest for later. Then, just as I had begun to settle comfortably, I sensed an ill omen in the air. I expected it was directed at me due to my day of unfortunate and uncanny bad luck. I decided to continue to wander for a while.

Who is this Lady Luck? Where can I find her? I hope I don’t die. These were all thoughts that roiled in my head.

Then I saw a strange building surrounded by lava. It looked surprisingly sound compared to most of the places I had seen already, so I decided to take a look.

“Who’s there?" groaned a wicked voice.

“I am a traveller and I am experiencing extraordinary bad luck.” I replied.

“You had better come in." The door magically opened.

The inside of the building was strange indeed. Several strange potions were brewing and what appeared to be areas where rituals were performed were inside. I was aghast to see that there was much blood splattered across the floor!

“Well then, why do you have bad luck? Perhaps it was bad luck venturing into the wilderness in the first place."

“Perhaps you would care to introduce yourself?” I asked as benignly as I could muster, considering I was extremely nervous.

“Names mean nothing in this world, yet I will satisfy your curiosity. I am Carius and I stay here performing rituals to Zamorak. He met with me and I have helped elevate his status in the world of the gods. I am a Chaos Druid, and I am working on a ritual to call Rhombard the Vizier back to life.”

It was stupid of me to not instantly know that he was a Chaos Druid. He was wearing bright red robes and had a strange mark on his hand- two obvious indications.

“But aren’t Chaos Druids crazy and evil?" I asked tentatively.

“I’m not the average Chaos Druid… most of them just hang around making tiny insignificant rituals. However, I have the power to make more powerful rituals. We take lives for good reason, for the good of Zamorak’s return. And for the record, we are not crazy and evil… we all have justification for our actions."

“Justifications? JUSTIFICATIONS?!!! How can sacrificing people and summoning ghosts and demons be justified?! How can preparing a path for Zamorak to re-enter this world be justified?" I fumed with anger.

“You do not understand, my friend. Zamorak was betrayed by Saradomin… he did not deserve to be killed and tortured. Unfortunately, there are people in this world who do not know the absolute truth. It appears you are one of…”

“NO! Why are you lying?! Everyone knows the great battle of the gods couldn’t be avoided. Saradomin killed Zamorak for the good of us all, and then went into a deep slumber. Don’t you know about the battle of the gods written in old times? Back in the days of old, King Saradomin owned half of RuneScape: Misthalin and Asgarnia. King Zamorak owned Kandarin. Saradomin had taught his people well; they flourished and grew strong."

"Zamorak, however, could not teach his people to be good and kind. So they had bad harvests and had poor quality of life. This is exactly the reason that Ardougne is called the City of Thieves. Their quality of life was so poor that people had to resort to stealing from each other’s homes. It was easy for people to backstab and deceive, and no one was safe. Zamorak decided that he would take Saradomin’s land. He said their great success was due to the fact that their land was holy. Zamorak started plans to take over. His first move was to put guards on White Wolf Mountain. Any Saradomin scouts would be disposed of and no one would be the wiser. He then forced the Gnomes to help him with his mission. He ordered them to make many weapons."

"After that he sealed off the Northlands- the land we now call the Wilderness, so that Saradomin could not spy on his plans. He gathered his mages and druids about him. Safely esconsed in the Northlands, he set about making a grand plan to take over the world. Saradomin, who had been exploring the Northlands, not knowing that it was the new stronghold of Zamorak, was surprised when Zamorak attacked in force. Saradomin and his holy Paladins brought great destruction to Zamorak’s ranks."

"However, Zamorak, through sheer force of numbers, defeated the Paladins. Saradomin had teleported to a safe land. This is when Zamorak began his pillaging. He entered the area now known as Taverly- it was just grass then, and his army made their way to Falador. They easily vanquished West Falador, but then they came face to face with the White Knights. But, even the White Knights were defeated with relative ease. Then, Zamorak…”

“You have a one-way perspective. You have just heard half-truths.” Carius took out a potion. “Now we shall go back in time and see the truth."

I had not a shred of doubt who was the holy and superior god. But I would have to go through this illusion anyway.

“Prepare yourself… please close your eyes lest the path to the past damage them…” Then he sprinkled the potion on a dolmen. He placed some strange incense or herb on it and began to chant. “Woricus, Kelminar, gods from the past, allow us passage to your time. Muchel, Rathes, Korimus, Elthen, Karmanicus, Terran, Tsurm, we must once again visit your time…”

Gods from the past? I wondered.

The dolmen suddenly glowed into a rainbow-colored sphere.

“Now touch the sphere and we shall go back… Stay with me at all times!”
